Preparing Our Hearts for Advent

Preparing Our Hearts for Advent

As we step into the season of Advent, I’m reminded of how deeply we need this sacred pause. Advent invites us to slow our pace, quiet our worries, and prepare room in our hearts for Christ to enter in new and life-giving ways. In a world that pulls us in so many directions, the rhythms of Advent help re-center our souls on what truly matters: God’s presence, God’s promise, and God’s hope breaking into our everyday lives.

One of the most beautiful ways we experience that hope is by coming together as a church family. Community shapes us. Shared meals, shared worship, shared stories, these are gifts God uses to deepen our faith and draw us closer to one another. That’s why I’m especially excited for our 3-week Advent Study & Dinner: Carols of the Season – Exploring Advent on December 3, 10, and 17. This study is open to all ages (kids, students, and adults) and offers a chance to explore how some of our most beloved Christmas carols point us toward the Advent promises of Peace, Joy, and Love. In a season that can easily become hurried and noisy, this gathering invites us to rediscover the WONDER of Christmas through scripture, song, and conversation around the table. Please register online at PTCUMC.ORG/ADVENT. I hope you’ll invite a friend or neighbor and join us as we experience Advent in a fresh and meaningful way.

But preparing our hearts in Advent also shapes how we prepare our hands… how we serve, give, and love like Jesus. Our church has already shown such a beautiful expression of generosity through our recent Diaper Drive, and I want to celebrate what you made possible:

  • $2,548.56 donated,
  • 7,829 diapers, and
  • 16,160 wipes collected.

These numbers aren’t just statistics; they represent families who will feel supported and cared for during a time when they need it most. What a powerful reflection of Christ’s compassion. This just makes my heart so happy to see our church show up and support families in our community.

And as we continue walking through Advent, we have another opportunity to share that same love through our “Give Food” Drive, supporting three of our local mission partners: I-58 MissionThe Real Life Center, and Fayette Samaritans. Each of these ministries plays a vital role in caring for our neighbors, and together we can help ensure families have what they need during this season. You can find the full donation list of items on our website and you can even donate online. Please visit PTCUMC.ORG/GIVEFOOD for more details. Every contribution, no matter the size, becomes part of the larger story God is writing through this church: a story of hope shared and needs met.

So, as Advent unfolds, my prayer is that we enter the season with open hearts and willing hands. That as we gather, learn, worship, and serve, we are reminded that Christ comes not just to renew us individually, but to draw us together as a people shaped by His peace, joy, and love. May this season deepen our faith, strengthen our connections, and lead us to reflect the light of Christ in every place God sends us.

I look forward to experiencing Advent with you whether it’s around the dinner table, in worship, or in the ways we serve our community with generosity and grace.
