What Does it Mean to Serve in Worship?
Our church, Peachtree City United Methodist Church, is an amazing group of people. When we look at the number and variety of activities and programs that we host, present, or attend each week, it is truly astonishing. People come in and out of our facilities, traveling across and through our campus morning, afternoon, and evening. And this happens every day of the week, in every season of the year.
For many of us who participate in only a few of these gatherings, it is easy to recognize the key people who are up front or actively leading an event. What can be more challenging to see is the much larger number of people serving behind the scenes to help ensure that each activity is carried out to the best of our abilities.
In every area of ministry at our church—programs for students, children, and Weekday School; groups for adults at every stage of life; and care ministries serving our greater community—these ministries move forward because of the time and talents of people who have chosen to serve.
The same is true of our Sunday morning worship experiences. It is easy to see those who stand up front to lead, but teams of people work behind the scenes to plan, organize, and implement every element of worship. It takes a large group of people, and in many ways, it has always been this way.
During the Exodus from Egypt, when Moses returned from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments, the tribe of Levi was set apart from among the people for service. In the Book of Numbers, God said, “Behold, bring the tribe of Levi and present them, for they are to perform duties for the whole community by doing the work of the tabernacle.”
The roles and duties required for worship at PTCUMC may look very different from those of ancient times, but the calling remains: God invites His people to use their gifts and talents in the worship of God and the life of His church.
Throughout the month of September, we are all being challenged to consider where and how we might use our talents and resources to serve God and His people.
Maybe God is nudging you to become part of the Worship Tribe.
Serving Through Worship
Our Music Teams lead the congregation in songs of praise and thanksgiving. There are opportunities for choristers, band members, bell ringers, and instrumentalists. All are welcome to participate.
Our Tech Teams facilitate the images and videos we see on the screens, manage the volume and balance of everything we hear, and produce our livestream services for church members near and far.
Our Worship Support Team helps prepare and arrange the worship space, including décor, banners, candles, communion elements, and seasonal designs.
Why Is This Important?
God calls us to offer our whole heart and our gifts in service to Him. Worship honors God, aligns our hearts with truth, connects our spirits with the one Spirit, and transforms our daily lives. This ministry serves by helping God’s people come before Him in worship.
Psalm 100 calls us all: “Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness, come before Him with joyful songs.”
What Might This Look Like for You?
Perhaps you have a voice or an instrument that you haven’t used for some time. We have a place for you.
Maybe you don’t have experience with cameras or a soundboard. We have a place for you.
Perhaps you have an eye for detail or an interest in creative design. We have a place for you.
Some can participate regularly; others may be able to serve only seasonally or every few weeks. We have a place for you.
Whether you find your place to serve in Worship Ministry or in another area of our church, God has a place for YOU!
I encourage you to reach out to me or to anyone you see serving in any of these areas. Ask what it might be like. Ask how you could get involved. You may discover a joy and a sense of purpose in working together with others toward the worship of God in His church.
There is a place for you in the Worship Tribe.
